ON TRENTHAM TRACKS

MIST AGAIN THICK

CARTERTON FINAL TRIALS

(By "Rangatira.")

Horses engaged at the Carterton Meeting on Saturday occupied main attention at Trentham this morning, but a. very heavy mist made it impossible to use the watch to any extent. For the greater part of the morning the seven furlongs post was the only one discernible from the centre of the course. One or two gallops were secured by means of two watches. T. R. George waited till late to work' most of his .team. Except for the mist the weather was fine and crisp, with the trial grass and plough tracks, both surface damp, in excellent galloping order.

ON THE GRASS

Good Sun (R. L. Hitchen) allowed Yours Truly (L. T. Nesbitt) to lead him over half a mile. Debham (R. A. Dodson) was two lengths ahead of Dissipation (G. Flood) after half a mile. Girl Pat (P./ Burgess) was doing it better than Settlement (C.Sargent) at the end of five furlongs. Sunee and Red Sun worked usefully early. .

Sigurd (S. Wilson) ran on well to beat Accomplice (Flood) arid Cricket (Dodson) by half a length over seven furlongs in lmin 29 3-ssec, a good gallop by all horses. Accomplice is likely to start in the Gladstone Hack Handicap on Saturday in preference to the final, eyent.: . .;

. Rockingham (Burgess) just shaded Liane (Wilson) over-seven furlongs in lmin 30 3-Ssec. ■

Southern Blood (Burgess) was doing it better than Sunbeam (Wilson), with Siegmund behind, after covering seven furlongs in lmin 30sec. Lustral (J. McCauley) easily beat Laggard (Burgess) over six furlongs ';in lmin 19sec, approximately, as the post was barely discernible. .

Drachma (W. Doyle) showed his brilliance in. accounting for Floral Robe (S. R. Farland) by a good two lengths, with Piastre, (A. E. Bennet). several lengths further back, after half a mile in 49sec. Piastre went; badly, but he is liable to do better in races.

Twenty Grand (Sargent) finished half a length in front of Diarens (R. A. Hawkings) after covering five furlongs in Imin 3sec. On the two-year-old grass Dorak (A. Sim) ran three fur-, longs in 37 l-ssec. .

ON THE PLOUGH.

Roaming (Hawkings). was ■' going along well at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 30 2-ssec. Galteemore (Bennet) was three lengths too good for Camilla Horn (F. Power) over seven furlongs in Imin 29 2-ssec. Galteemore, though he has not been back for long and has none of his old gloss in his coat, has worked excellently in both his gallops this week. .'•'...'

Quexona (Bennet). was always well clear of Protectress (R. L.. Dougan) over five furlongs in Imin 4sec, the last half-mile in 50 2-ssec.

Alloa (A. W. Sim) came from liehind to beat Free Gold (Doyle) by a couple of lengths over five furlongs in Imin 3 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 50 3-sseci' Alloa worked better than on Tuesday, but Free Gold was not knocked about. ■ • ■■. •; ■,

The other horses for Car'tertori were mainly allotted strong pacing tasks. Alunga, though he is "doing satisfactorily, is still an unlikely starter on Saturday. The two-year-old Lady Baron may also not run. The rest of the Trentham team are definitely booked for the meeting. Laggard is to be ridden by S. Anderson, and J. McCauley may take the mount on Lustral. As A. Jenkins will probably, be required for Lady Siegfried another rider will have to be found'for Camilla Horn. W. Doyle has an additional mount on Lucullus Lad in the Cup, and L. J. Ellis may ride Impersonater at some pounds overweight. A. E. Bennet's mounts at Opunake are Clessamor and Glenthawn.
