BRITAIN'S RECOVERY
NOT DUE TO RE-ARMAMENT
'Speaking at the annual dinner of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, Mr. R. Boulter, his Majesty's Trade Commissioner, referred tri the common belief that the activity of British industry in the manufacture of armaments has been responsible for its ; prosperous condition. '-■.-.■ ..■'■■
The Trade Commissioner'said that a little less than a year ago he had endeavoured to remove an impression that re-armament was solely responsible for Britain's recovery, but the ! suggestion was still made in. certain quarters. Actually the re-armament programme accounted for only a comparatively small part of the increase in industrial activity. On the basis of official figures, re-armament had not added more than 4 per cent, to the numbers already in employment. There had been rumours that Britain would not export iron and steel, but actually there had been very few cases in which he had not been, able to secure importers' requirements. He had. been advised that orders for structural steel placed in Britain in February would be shipped in April, May, and June. They could- not have much better delivery than that.
