HEALTH AND PROGRESS

(To the Editor.) Sir, —During the summer I have watched thousands ol men, women, and children gaining health and. vigour at one of Wellington's most popular bathing places, Evans Bay, and free of charge, which is as it should be. Here one sees lithe brown bodies, diving and splashing, batches of youngsters from the schools, toilers from factory, shop, and office, one and all revelling in an invigorating bathe in absolute safety. Now, along comes Progress, that friend of mankind, who exacts payment in full. The road must be widened, for more and more cars will pass this way; the bathing sheds are to be moved out to make room. Is this wonderful spot doomed, or are the powers that be fully alive to its value and are they planning accordingly? I appeal to them to see that this spot is preserved for all time, and thus ensure our citizens, both young and old, the means of attaining that which is seldom appreciated until it is lost — good health. I thank you for the space I know you will gladly give in the interests of those who seek health the natural way.—l am, etc., EVANS BAY.
