SCORCHING BAY

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Some seven or eight years ago the Government handed to the City of Wellington 15 acres of land in Scorching Bay for the purpose of forming a reserve. Apparently, nobody was very interested, and little or nothing has been done to create what should be a valuable asset in the city reserves. About two years ago a beautifying society, looking ahead to the time when the Centennial Exhibition will bring many visitors to the capital, formulated a scheme for improving the waterfront. This plan included the beautifying of Scorching Bay, and the council agreed to have the shacks which have been erected removed as a preliminary step towards a better state of affairs. Unfortunately, the society seems to have become moribund, and Scorching Bay is still an eyesore to the visitor and a reproach to the .citizen. ■ As the owners of the whares have now had several years notice to remove their structures it would seem that the time is opportune to remind the City Council of its obligation in the matter.—l am, etc., . WAKE UP.
