FAREWELL PARTY

REPRESENTATIVE SURFERS

Three members of the Maranui Surf Club (Messrs. J. T. Clark, D. K. Evan, and H. C. Downs), who will leave with the New Zealand surf team on Tuesday to compete in the life-saving championships at Sydney, were guests of honour at a farewell party given by Mr. and- Mrs. L. Bridge at their, home, Queen's Drive, Lyall Bay, last night.' There were about a hundred guests present to wish the swimmers good luck and success in the competitions. [Two other members of; the Maranui Club, Messrs. E. B. Hughes (captain) I and C. E. Claridge, who will travel as members of the official party, were also present. ' i ■

Presentations to each member of the team were made by the president, Mr. T. G. Queree,- who introduced them to the gathering and wished them all good luck in the future. He added that Mr. Hughes, who had been" captain of the club for the last twelve years or more and who was well known as probably the most outstanding captain

in New Zealand surf life-saving history, was going to Australia with the team, his trip being sponsored by Maranui members. Mr. F. H. Jackson •(chairman) also spoke of tltfe. fine^re-' cords of the selected men and wished them every success. Each member .of the team was presented with a travelling bag, suitably initialled. The rooms were gay with, hydrangeas in shades of pink and blue, and there were "mixed bowls" of glorious midsummer flowers. Dancing was continued, till a late.hour, and a homemade supper was served.

Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. F. Chapman, Mr. and Mrs. Martindale, Mr. and Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Sheppard (Sydney), Mrs. C. Ashenden, Mrs'. Liddell, Mrs. Durrant; Misses N. Bridge, M. Brooking, L. and C. McGjll, Donnelly, Jean .Cameron, J. G. Chandler, L. and R. Martindale; and Messrs. V. and H. Baird, W. N. and" E. Raven, A, Upchurch,; K. Stephen, P. Rosie, C. R. Mentiplay, D. Cochrane, N. Ashenden, P. Aldous, E. Tomlinson, and C. Liddell.
