CHESS STUDIES
An excellent work on chess, a collection of 360 end-game studies by the famous Russian composer, A. A. Troitzky, has been published recently. The work of the translator,.Mr. A./D. Pritzon, leaves nothing to be desired. Good books on the end-game are few, and Mr. Troitzky's volume" is a very valuable addition to them. The pages, wHich are crowded with beautifullyprinted diagrams, are full of novel ideas, and give a masterly exposition of endings of many different kinds. Of the various themes dealt with may be mentioned (a) win by creating a mating net, (b) Zug-Zwang, (c) win of a piece with the help of making threats, (d) win of a piece by direct attack, (c) win through queening of a pawn, (f) win of a piece by threat of pawn-promotion, (g) win by pawnpromotion to a minor piece, and (h) various themes for transfer of initiative. In recent years the world's leading chess masters have given much intensive study to the end game, an up-to-date knowledge of which is regarded as essential for success in match play. Mr. Troitzky's book should therefore be in great demand.
