PEKOE'S READY WIN
PROMISING KIOSK GELDING
Pekoe, who was running on fifth at the end'of the second day's hack sprint, was taken to the front within the first half-fuiipng of the Melrose Handicap, and there he stayed without ever looking like being pulled back. He was (not pushed out at the close, which accounted for Accomplice's finishing only a length behind him. Pekoe had his first racing only at I Christmas, and he was a winner at Stratford, so he-has now scored twice in six outings, a very promising start. iHe is a three-year-old bay gelding by the Tea Tray horse Kiosk out of the Grandcourt—Orozino mare Court Step, who never raced herself, but is a fullsister to Grand Jury and Knollmere,; two good performers. It is the Desert j Gold family, as Orozino was out of the famous mare's full-sister D'Oro. Pekoe races in the colours of his breeder, Mr. ' Accomplice, first out, but unable to hold her position, was back eight or nine places on reaching the straight, but she came very fast inside the last furlong to secure second money, ihis Night Raid filly showed her best form this season at the meeting ,and she should have a turn on the autumn cirCUMulatto, absolute last entering the straight, ran through brilliantly for third money. This Nigger Minstrel filly is still a maiden, but with her dashing late runs she should be easily placed for a win during the next month or so, as the staying hacks are well catered for-in the south. Rockingham finished like a train into j fourth place; but, after being reefed jback ea?ly and then floundering about j when falling astern, he took too long in starting his claim in the straight. Moreover, he was checked just after i entering the home stretch so he was : probably very unlucky not to finish in Thee other 6Thad their opportunities, excepting only Sam's Choice^who was squeezed out at the start. Thala was handy throughout, but possibly did not receive too good a passage over on the fence. Rabble was disappointing. Double Gift went up to second at the half-mile, but later faded. Alloa, the middle day's winner, made no showing whatever.
