DULL MARKET
Cabled information received by the Primary Products Marketing Department describes the London market for New Zealand butter as dull, with wholesale quotations 3s a cwt lower than the previous week. Quotations are:—New Zealand, salted, 109s to 110s a cwt, compared with 112s to 113s a week ago and 93s at the corresponding period last year; unsalted, 112s to 114s; Australian, salted 108s to 109s (Ills to li2s),unsal ted 112s; Danish, spot 134s (1355). Unsalted butters: 'Argentine, 105s to 109s; Dutch, 112s to 113s, and up to 117s for extra fine quality; Lithuanian, 116s. The retail prices are unchanged at Is 2d for New Zealand and Is 4d for Danish.^ The stock position is as follows:— Jan. 21,1937. Jan. 21,1938. Tons. Tons. New Zealand .. 5646 4849 Australian ...... 4316 2377 Totals .... 9962 7226 The Imperial Economic Committee estimates all butters in store at 334,908 boxes, compared with 884,538 boxes at the corresponding date last year. The cheese market is quiet with wholesale prices showing a slight rise for the week. ■ Quotations, with those for the previous week in parentheses, are:— New Zealand, white 69s to. 69s 6d a cwt (68s to 68s 6d), coloured 69s 6d to 70s (69s to 69s 6d); Australian, white 65s to 67s (64s to 665), coloured 66s t0,67s 6d (64s to 675); Canadian, white and coloured, 73s to 74s (same). Finest English farmers' is steady at 96s to 98s. , . There are 50,985 crates of New Zealand cheese in store, compared with 48,770 a year ago, and 118,631 boxes of Canadian, as against 101,046.
