It is acknowledged as the most frightful bombing of the war. The entire city in less than two minutes' bombing was reduced to terror. The raiders completed' their job by machine-gunning the streets. Five eight-storey buildings in one street were wrecked, the occupants being buried. Two hundred dead and wounded were removed from a burning warehouse, and 50 are still imprisoned. Aviation experts say that the. bombs were the most powerful that haye 1 been seen; although they weighed less than two hundredweight they were as destructive as bombs of a ton in weight.
