LORD PALMERSTON'S REPLY
Lord Palmerston, Prime Minister of England 80 years ago, was a keen racing man. He caused no end .of controversy over a horse he owned named Iliona. The question of the correct pronunciation of the name of this animal became so acute that huge bets, were struck, and eventually the' Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, was called upon to adjudicate in the matter to settle the wagers. When Lord Palmerston was approached to settle the affair his answer was characteristic. "You can call it what you darn well please so long as. she wins the Cesarewitch for me," exclaimed his lordship, and Iliona did not disappoint Palmerston at Newmarket in 1841.
