OLD FIRE STATION
BEING REMODELLED
TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT'S NEW
HOME
The old ■ fire station, a brick buildIng with considerable floor space, is being remodelled inside to accommodate the city traffic department and others of the Corporation staff, including the health inspectors. Both ■these departments are at' present ihoused in Civic Chambers in Lower Cuba Street. For many years the Ijpaffic department has occupied the second floor there, which, with the ntimber of drivers' licences handled arid the many inquiries made, is out of the way for 'he public, and inconvenient' for the officers. The rent being pai\i '- aiso a reason for utilising the old1 fire sfa'tion. Ais the old station was originally erected to accommodate a large staff of men, there will be ample room for the traffic department, which will occupy the ground floor, where formerly the fire engines gleamed. Quarters are vary cramped for this department in its present offices. The upper floor of the\ station will be used for otfyer members of the city's staff. It is hoped to have the alterations, completed, by March 31. '
