Two new records wer/c established at the New Zealand intermediate and junior swimming championships, which opened at the Nelson Municipal Baths on Saturday. Tiie weather was ideal, and there was.tin attendance of
1000. • / Honours in the fli.'st championship, the 75yds junior boys' breaststroke, went to Otago, wheii Peat won from Erikson '(Canterbury) by one foot, with Buckland (OAjago) only a touch: away, third. i The Auckland .Representative, Miss Grey, broke her >£>wn New Zealand: record of "2min 4fJ 3-ssec by 4-5 of a; second in winning the 220yds inter-., mediate girls' fr/>e-style event. Miss, Watts (Wellington) and Miss Ivmg (Hawke's Bay), \ who qualified in the: heats, did not 'compete in the final,: leaving four competitors. The Nelson water is considered slower than in some ■northern,, baths, and the winner was given a gfeat ovation for her ttne performance. The 100yds 'intermediate boys' i'rde-; style produced the most exciting race of the eventag, six competitors being within threei yards ot each other at tiaefinish. It was the flr. c;t time that a backstroke event had been decided at the championships. ; ' Though there was only one'competi-' tor for the .intermediate girls'' dive,' Miss R. Smith (OtagO) gave a brilliant: performance. Her one and a Jaalf; somersault off the -low boamd was iper-: feet. She was'given a rousing ovation.; For four lengths in the 220 yards \ junior bqyS' free-style, Nemetoß; (Auckland) and Mason (Wellington)! kept 'together, .but Mason twice wenti on to the lane Topes, and Wettleton; won ;by eight .yards. !
