ATTEMPT TO BURN BOAT
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, January 16.
A deliberate attempt to burn the framework of a 35ft auxiliary yawl which is in the course of construction in a section at the rear of the Leyland O'Brien Timber Company's premises in Fanshawe Street, was made about 3 o'clock on Saturday morning.
Fortunately for the owner and builder, Mr. George Robert Sibley, who lives nearby, a nightwatchman employed by the timber company, discovered the' fire and extinguished it before any great damage had been done. Freeman's Bay police were advised, and inquiries showed that an old motor tyre, some tar, and a quantity of chips and shavings had been stacked under the stern and fired.
Mr. Sibley, who is building the craft in his spare time, was unaware of the attempt made to burn the framework of the vessel until he went to the section at 7 o'clock to work upon it. He was disappointed to find a considerable portion of the stern badly charred. He had just started to put on the first of two skins. However, it was only the stern that was damaged, and this is repairable.
When finished, the boat, which is of American design, will have a slip keel.
