MIDLAND BEAT VARSITY

Two excellent displays of batting 111 by R. O'Neill and 83 by Buddie, put Midland 55 runs ahead of University on the fir3t innings at Kilbirnie, the side running up 320 in answer to

University's zoo. jaaa.uieie "=<=" ii«^ time Midland was within reach of an outright win, seven University wickets having gone for 167 by stumps^ their second innings. The wicket was good" and the outfield fast, but the fielding, on .both sides, had very_ weak Paßuddie and O'Neill . changed the mediocre score of six wickets foi lUb to seven for 246. Buddie, who resumed with Ralfe with 36, played • neat shots on both sides of the wicket when he was with O'Neill, most .of them being on the carpet. O Neill was equally-attractive with his weighty leg and off strokes, but the most pleasing feature of the partnership was the smartness of the running between the wickets. O'Neill, particularly, was quick ,on the follow-up after playing the ball, play Which tended ;to bustle the closer fieldsmen. When

Buddie was bowled by Dean he had made 83, which included ten 4's. O'Neill's batting was far in advance of his recent record, and very few of his trokes were not confident. He was uncertain once or twice and gave one fairly easy chance in his eighties, but his general batting merited a century. University's total was passed with O'Neill and Macßae associated just after 3 o'clock, and the innings closed at 3.30 for 320. O'Neill was caught at mid-off at 111, and Macßae contributed a useful 23. Dean's slows took three for 57. He was inclined to overpitch, but he flighted the ball well. Whdn the first two University wickets fell for 2 runs. Midland's prospect of an "outright" appeared bright, but Wiren stemmed the rot and was still jin at stumps for 51. His batting was very slow, but the right tactics for the state of the game. Dean and Stephenson made 28 and 21 not out respectively, both batting freely. O'Neill, in attempting a catch in the slips, off Ralfe's bowling, split a finger on his right hand and had to | have a stitch inserted. Ralfe took five of the seven wickets for 28.
