HUTT V. WELLINGTON

At the close of play on the.first day Hutt "had scored 180 and "Wellington 252 for three wickets. Thinking that his lead of 72 was sufficient,. the Wellington captain declared his innings closed at the beginning of the second day. For some time it looked as if the, declaration was justified, but good innings from Ross (55),,Aim (82), and Champness (49), aided by a ninth wicket partnership of sixty-odd-by Muir and Fowler, rather upset Wellington notions of an outright win. ' - Ross, and Champness have to thank fielding lapses for being allowed to get so far, but they made good use of their chances, and belted the bowling ;in hearty style. Aim's 82, which included twelve 4's, was compiled in about two hours; and was the result of sound and watchful cricket. The partnership between Aim and Champness was a fast one as runs were scored at. the rate of two a minute. .Hutt declared its second innings , a few minutes after 5 o'clock, and Wellington thus had 75 minutes in which to make 195 for an, outright win. A minor sensation occurred when Ell, Kuhn, and Bennett were all dismissed before 20 showed on the board. The run out of Ell caused some discussion, basec on whether the ball hit the wicket. Morgan, and Thomas added 39, but the loss of the latter at 6 o'clock made the position rather ticklish. However, Morgan was in excellent form, and his 56 not out included some well-timed cover drives. . Details: — HUTT. First innings 180 Second Innings.
