SPORTING

ON TRENTHAM TRACKS

THE FINAL TRIALS

DICTATE IN GOOD FETTLE

(By "Kangatira.")

With practically all visiting horses on the scene, the Trentham tracks were a hive of activity between 5 and ,6 o'clock this morning, but most of the work was confined to short galloping and so many horses were working at once at times that it was next to impossible to clock them all. The outside of the course proper, on which the distances are correctly measured,.; and the plough were both in use, but; most of the trials were dons on the:, course proper. The going was last, (* Amigo and Icing ran half a mite well within themselves in 50 l-ssec. Laughing Lass took 49sec, and The Bigot 50 3-ssec. Alby beat Vadanoe by half a length in 49sec. Dissipation just shaded Cricket in 49 l-ssec, a good effort for Cricket, who is not a track specialist. The best half-mile was recorded by ; Dictate, who was going particularly i well in beating Rockingham by a length, with Dracula three lengths back, in 48 2-ssec. Pakanui also went along attractively in registering 48 4-ssec, showing little reluctance about going to the post. The only other horse clocked to break 49sec was Arvakur, who seemed to have a little in hand in beating Prediction, who did not begin too well, by a neck in the same time as Pakanui. Arvakur is still making a noise.

Mishna was half a length in front of Prime Quality after running half a mile in 49' l-ssec. Salient Knight, after a slow beginning, took 49 4-ssec, Lady Lyric and Diareus 50sec, and Dunmanway and Pekoe 50 4-ssec.

Over a longer distance, Cerne Abbas, after being a couple of lengths clear at the half-way, finished just in front of Kelly at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 31sec, the last half-mile in 51sec- Cerne Abbas really looks as well as ever. Kelly, who will be ridden in the Cup by R. McTavish, was running on strongly, and some who saw him at Auckland recently are satisfied that he will be one of the hardest horses to beat tomorrow.

Debham and Accomplice ran. six furlongs in lmin 16 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 50 2-ssec. Love Lilt was several lengths in front of Amoroso at the end of six furlongs in lmin 19sec. Linguist, doing it easily at the close, took lmin 17 3-ssec,. the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec..

On the plough Wild Chase ran seven furlongs in lmin 32sec. Argentic slipped easily away from Paper Slipper at the end of the same distance in lmin 29 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 51sec. Rabble was a ' neck in front of Galteemore after running six furlongs in lmin 16sec, the last half-mile in 50 l-ssec.

A good gallop on this track was a six furlongs in which Roy Bun beat Lustral by a neck in lmin 15sec,- the last half-mile in 50sec. Siegmund was in the gallop, but he has never liked the plough, and he finished some lengths behind.

Ben Braggie, who looks bigger than he usually has, did the last half-mile of five furlongs in 50sec. In a similar gallop Studley Eoyal took 51sec for his last half-mile.

Te Hero, working late on Saturday morning, beat Peerless easily over half a mile down from- the four furlongs barrier.

There was a doubt in some quarters whether Alma would be making the trip, but she was out doing pace work on the plough, and so was Lord Nuffield.

As far as can be ascertained all horses will be starting in the Cup and Telegraph. No scratchings at all have yet been announced for the opening day of the meeting, but Haupongi will not be starting in the highweight.
