CONTEST AT MASTERTON

Further arrangements in connection with the pipe band contest to be held at Masterton on Saturday, February 12, were discussed at a meeting of the eexcutive of the Wellington-Hawke's Bay Pipe Band Centre, held on Saturday evening. There were present Pipe-Major -V. J. Nicholson, president (Palmerston North), Pipe-Major T. G. Bedding (Scots College), Pipe-Major D. Peters and C. Stewart (Ruahine), Piper E. Cameron (Wanganui), Pipe-Major C. Stewart (Wellington Caledonian), J. W. Brown (Nelson), Pipe-Sergeant W. Smith (Hunterville), Pipe-Major G. McLennon and Drum-Major A. Holson (Pipes and Drums . First Battalion, Wellington Regiment), and M. Gray Nasmith (secretary). It was decided that the Test selection be held immediately following the quickstep competition. The recommendation of the Masterton committee to appoint Captain J. C. Holmes as an additional military judge and Lieutenant I. A. Hart as judge of paces was adopted. The pipe bands of the Manawatu Scottish Society, Wellington Caledonian Society, Wairarapa^ High School, Scots College, Ruahine, and the Pipes and Drums, First Battalion, the Wellington Regiment, intimated their intention of competing at the contest. Entries are to close a fortnight prior to the contest, and competing bands are to forward the names of the pipemajor and drum-major, the tartan to be worn, and a copy of the music to the secretary. Discussion took place on the proposed new rules of the Highland Pipe Bands' Association and the proposed new regulations governing contests. The secretary was appointed to repre-. sent the centre at a meeting of the association in Palmerston North at Easter, when the new rules and regulations will be considered. The Pipe Bands Association reported that the Wellington-Hawke's Bay Centre was the largest in New Zea- j land, embracing fifteen bands. Other centres were as follows: —Auckland. 5; Taranaki, 5; Canterbury-West Coast. 11; Otago, 7; Southland. 6; total for North Island. 25, South Island 24; total for New Zealand, 49. The War.ganui Aero Club's Hawke, piloted by Mr. H. L. Tancred, with Mr. S. R. McCallu'm as passenger, arrived at Rongotai from Wanganui at 11.25 this morning.*
