THE CYCLISTS
APPLICATION DECLINED
An application by the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association to reinclude E. G. L. Hughes (Auckland) as an additional rider in the New Zealand team for the British Empire Games was declined today by the New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Association.
Hughes originally was among the seven cyclists selected, but after the New Zealand track cycling championships in Christchurch recently permission was sought for the withdrawal of his name and the substitution of G. R. Giles (Canterbury). This was granted. When the executive of the Olympic and Empire Games Association met today a request was made that approval be given for Hughes's inclusion.
As each country is allowed three representatives only in each event, the inclusion of Hughes for one event would have involved the dropping of one of the other riders for that particular event. This was the suggestion, R. H. Taylor (Auckland) being the rider named for displacement in one event, Such a course would have meant that Hughes would compete in one event only in Sydney and Taylor also. Moreover, it was slated after the meeting that it appeared that Tay,lor. was the better rider.
