PARIS, January 11

Mystery surrounds reports from Valencia of a terrific explosion at Madrid which wrecked eight blocks of houses and killed 100.

Telephone communication with Madrid and Paris was severed for some hours. It is unknown whether this was due to the explosion or to official steps to prevent the news leaking out.
