DISTINCT CHECK
ITALO-GERMAN EFFORTS
SPANISH ARENA
WHITEHALL OPINION
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Cownylit.) (Received January 12, 11.10 a.m.) LONDON, January 11. The battle of Teruel is regarded in Whitehall as a distinct check to the Italo-German efforts to secure a foothold in the Western Mediterranean, declares the "Manchester Guardian."
It is becoming clear, the paper states, that ' the extremist influence in Republican Spain is waning. There is no longer any question of Russian interference, while Italy and Germany are not' relaxing their efforts. German military aeroplanes continue to cross France nightly, and while Italy has withdrawn her troops she is sending war material and engineers. Germans are making a special effort to strengthen the political and economic position at Bilbao, where they are investing capital, circulating Nazi pamphlets, and are doing thenutmost to counter British influence in Northern Spain. Both Italy and Germany are most disappointed at the way the war is dragging on, and they may increase their intervention.
