A DOUBLE ESCAPE
Pilot-Sergeant Cuthbert Tucker, the nineteen-year-old airman who had a narrow escape from death recently, crashed at Tangmere Aerodrome again two weeks later, and for the second time escaped injury. Officers and men were amazed at his good fortune. In the first accident, Tucker, who is attached to No. 43 Squadron, circled over the aerodrome in a machine the undercarriage of which was damaged and hanging loose. He stayed in 'the air for three hours until his petrol supply was exhausted. Then, controlling the machine beautifully, he landed. The second accident occurred just after two squadrons had left the aerodrome to provide an escort over the Channel for the King of the Belgians. Tucker, who returned a day or two earlier from leave granted him after his previous ordeal, was making one of his first flights since then. He made a forced landing and his machine was badly smashed. Tucker, who has had only about twenty hours' piloting, has been recommended for promotion after his display of courage and ability in his first accident.
