HOUSING IN BRITAIN
CLEARANCE OF SLUMS
The rapid progress being made in clearing slum areas in England was commented upon by Monsignor MacManus, of Palmerston North, who returned by the Hangitane yesterday after a six months" visit to Ireland and England. Monsignor MacManus visited his home town in County Leitrim, and found that very favourable progress had been made since his last visit twelve years ago.
In England,-he said to a "Post" reporter, there was no evidence of unemployment, one of the causes responsible for the present busy state of affairs being the British re-armament programme. In England there was much activity in the clearance of slum areas. In one part of London 5000 houses had been built in two years.
Monsignor MacManus took part in the Irish pilgrimage to Lourdcs (France) in September. About 3000 made the pilgrimage, but there were five pilgrimages from different parts of France, each pilgrimage consisting of 10,000 persons.
