HUTT VALLEY NEWS

CROWDED FINAL DANCES

(From "The Post's" Representative.)

The most successful social season in the history of the Returned Soldiers' Association, Lower Hutt, concluded yesterday with a brilliant "Joy Night." The atmosphere of cheery good-fellow-ship, which always characterises these gatherings, was emphasised in a marked degree by the approach of Christmas, and the 300 dancers joined wholeheartedly in the evening's festivities. An excellent orchestra set a lively pace throughout, streamers, carnival hats, and squeakers added to the gaiety, and the delicious supper provided was in keeping with the arrangements. An exhibition of the Spanish dance "Tango Flaminenco" was given by Miss Miriama Heketa, and met with warm applause, a tap dance being given in response as an encore. After presenting Miss Heketa with a bouquet, Mr. P. McNicol (social secretary), expressed the thanks of the committee to the many who had supported the dances and to those who had co-operated so well to make them such a success. The good influence of the R.S.A., he said, extended beyond the dances, not only in obtaining financial assistance for the "Diggers" through the benevolent fund, but also in fostering and extending the friendship among comrades. In appreciation *of their untiring services he had much pleasure in presenting Mrs. A. Robins (convener of the ladies' auxiliary) and Mrs. M. Crofts with floral tributes. A musical recital given by Mrs. Noel Taylor and pupils recently at Wesley Hall, Lower Hutt, was enthusiastically received by a large and 'interested audience of music lovers. Stands of hydrangeas and bowls of beautiful sweet-peas made effective decoration for the stage and formed an attractive setting for the performers. The items, including songs (several in character), choruses, vocal duets, and pianoforte selections covered a wide range of compositions, and evinced a high standard of music ability and finished performance. Those who contributed, vocal numbers were Mesdames E. Harland, F. Potter, W. Fisher, and Noel Taylor, Misses Edith and Jenny Pryde, Marie Pocknall, Beryl Butchers, and Elsie Jones, and Peggy Milne and Beatrice Taylor, character songs. Pianoforte items were given by Diana Nesbit, Colyn Hynes, Beatrice Taylor, Myra Gray, and John Flux.
