JUNIOR ACTIVITIES

A visit was paid recently by the secretary of the Red Cross Society and the Red Cross nurse in charge of,instructional work to the Saints Peter and Paul Convent School at Lower Hutt for the purpose of presenting the Junior Red Cross Cup to the school most proficient in first-aid work in the Wellington district. This school has had the honour of winning the trophy for the second year in succession.

The representatives of the society were received by Father Daly and the sister in charge. After the presentation ceremony Father Daly spoke in eulogistic terms of the value of the society's work in the school. As a compliment to the visitors the students rendered a number of concerted vocal items and gave a demonstration of their prowess m the art of verse-speaking. The secretary of the society conveyed warm thanks to Father Daly and members of the staff at the school for the practical interest and support shown in the society's work. Visits were also paid to the school at Makara, where a healthy Junior Red Cross Circle is carried on. A fine display of useful garments and toys, made by the students on behalf of the children at the Home of Compassion, was arrayed, the goods being handed over to the children recently.

The work of the Junior Red Cross circle of the Island Bay School culminated in a display of garments and toys for the Home of Compassion and Karitane Hospital. Present at the gathering were Miss Templeton, matron of Karitane; Mr. P. D. Hoskins, representing the Home of Compassion; secretary of the Red Cross Society; Miss LissingtoiT, Junior Red Cross; Miss Hill. Red Cross nurse. The president of the circle handed over the garments and gifts, which were gratefully acknowledged by Miss Templeton and Mr. Hoskins. Thanks were extended to Mr. Howarth and teachers for encouragement they had shown in this work. The children subsequently handed the garments and toys to the representatives of the respective institutions.
