COMMONS PLEASED

"DEFINITE STEP FORWARD"

(Received November 19, noon.)

LONDON, November 18,

The Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, was greeted with applause from all parts of the House of Commons when he announced in replyto the Leader of the Opposition, that he was happy to state that the exploratory discussions regarding an Anglo-American trade pact had reached a point enabling the Governments concerned to announce that negotiations were contemplated.

He added that this was a marked and definite step forward.

A Washington report says that a pact will offset the anti-Comintern pact.
