CHIEF RULER'S DERBIES

In a recent note it was mentioned that Royal Chief's success in' the New Zealand Derby last week gave defunct Chief Ruler' his first blue-riband winner. It is pointed out by a correspondent that this statement was erroneous, as The Tetrarch horse sired an earlier Derby -winner in Hoti "Spring, who scored in the 1929 South Derby. ' '. ■ It is somewhat surprising that the Chief Rulers have not figured more in the Derby records, as this cosmopolitan sire got several excellent stayers. In Hall Mark's A.J.C. Derby Deputy Ruler (by Chief Ruler) ran second; and; last year's defeat of Gold Rod into third place in the same event is still fresh in mind. The only' horses prior to Royal Chief to have been placed'in a Derby in the Dominion were the fillies Eaglet '(third in Honour's N.Z. Derby) and Gold Trail (third in Silver Scorn's N.Z. Derby).
