AMERICAN YEARLINGS
At .the yearling sales at Saratoga (New York State) in August, 528 lots were disposed of, an advance of 59 on last year. The total realised was approximately £315,000, which meant an average of a little over £595—a great one for such a. large number of youngsters. The aggregate was the greatest for Saratoga since 1930. The highest prices paid were:—Sir Gallahad lll—Marching Along colt. £6500; Sir Gallahad Hl—One Hour colt, £6250; and Display—Ariadne cqjt, £5000. Fifteen other colts made prices ranging from £4500 down to £2500, the latter also being the highest price paid for a filly. Mrs. Ethel V. Mars did not secure any of the three highest-priced yearlings, though she gave £4250 for one colt. In all. she purchased 17 yearlings for a total of £31,000; so her contribution to the sales was substantial.
