POSTPONED EVENT
MORNING'S RESULTS
It would have been Ta.ther too much for the officials to swallow had the weather today not been fine to enable them to go ahead wtlh the sports meeting which had to be postponed on Labour Day. With typical irony, Labour Day was the only day last month on which the sun refused to shine on Wellington. Conditions have remained dry and fine ever since, and, although the meeting is perhaps not quite the same as it would have been had it been held to schedule, in the bright sunshine today the gathering is a pleasant one. The meeting is being held at the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre's training ground at Hataitai Park, where the tracks are firm and hard. The only troublesome element is the wind, a fairly steady one from the north.'
The Labour Day sports meeting is always a big occasion for the children, and the officials saw to it this morning that there were plenty of races for the boys and girls, who attended in good numbers. The members of the Labour Day Celebrations Committee were assisted by officials of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre, including the president, Mr. A. C. Kitto, who is the director of the sports.
This afternoon was set aside for the main section of the programme, and this comprised athletic and cycling handicaps and also Highland dancing. The results of the events decided thiis morning were as follows:— Girls, 8 years.—l. Jackman, 1; M. O'Connor, 2. Boys, 7 years.—J. Hart, 1; E. Bendall,
