FAIR AND MILD
BUT WIND INCREASING
Special forecast lor Wellington:— Moderate but increarinf northwesterly winds. I Weather fair and mild, with increasing cloud. I The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for southerly to south-easterly winds at first in the far north, but northerly winds will soon be general. Winds will be mainly light to moderate in force, but about Cook and Fweaux Straits they will be strong at times. In eastern and northern districts the weather will be fair to fine, but on the West Coast and in the far south of the South Island it will be cloudy, with rain developing, and the latter conditions will extend northward later to Kawhia. Temperatures will be mild. An anticyclone now covers the New Zealand area, but it appears to be losing intensity and pressure is again falling in the south. As a consequence yesterday's fresh and squally southwesterly winds had by this morning decreased generally in force, and about and south of Cook Strait there has been a change to northerlies. The weather yesterday was cool and rather cloudy, and some light showers fell in a few isolated places. It was still cloudy this morning in western areas,'but the weather had much improved. Auckland's weather yesterday was again overcast, and some light showers fell during the night. A fresh southerly wind prevailed, but this decreased in the night, and the weather this morning was calm and cloudy. In Wellington it was fine during the early part of the morning, but most of the day was cloudy and rather threatening. A cool and fresh southerly breeze prevailed, but during the night this decreased and at 5.1S ajij. today the wind changed to the north. Hours of bright sunshine totalled six. The maximum temperature was 59 degrees and the minimum 43.7 degrees. i In Christchurch it was rather cloudy and hazy, with a fresh and cold southerly wind. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 56.2 arid 35.6 degrees respectively, and at Wigram, j where the records are taken, a frost of | 8.5 degrees was recorded last night. At 1.45 a.m. today the wind changed to the north-east, and at 9 a.m. a fresh east-north-easterly was blowing and the weather was fair. Dunedin had a strong south-westerJy wind, the weather being dull with an occasional trace of rain. This morning it was fine and almost calm.
