HUTT VALLEY NEWS

"INTERIOR DECORATION"

TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILD

Yesterday afternoon an exceptionally large number of members attended the monthly meeting of the Townswomen's Guild in the R.S.A. Rooms, Lower Hutt. Masses of blue Argentine pea in tall vases, tangerine poppies, ! bowls of calceolarias, and Solomon's " seal made charming decoration. Three ' glees by the guild choir (conducted by • Mrs. Timley) were heartily applauded, i and Mrs. Moran (president) introduc--1 ed the speaker of the afternoon, Mrs. 1 De Muth; whose lecture on "Interior 1 Decoration" was listened to with great ; interest. "In all old countries," said the speaker, "a national style has develop- ; ed through the ages in keeping with ' the character of the inhabitants, but i though on account of its youth there ' is none in New Zealand, interior decoration has developed greatly during the past ten years." She spoke of colour as one of the greatest gifts to humanity, and said that without colour, variety, and beauty through sight would be lost, and in a world devoid of colour we would see "grey spectres, in a world of shadows." Using an illustration of the three primary colours, she traced the formation of an up-to-date shade chart depicting 500 name colours. She showed how great a part colour plays in life and progress, the savage races (infants of humanity) using no subtlety in tone, red, blue, and yellow predominating, while older races, instancing Persia and India, use no full tones, but peculiarly attractive subdued colours. Some recently Used colour schemes of decoration were then described, an especially charming one being that of a room with a petunia coloured carpet, grey-green walls, amber hangings, and old gold furniture, with ice blue and emerald green sparingly used for colour accents. During the tea interval Mrs. De Muth replied to many questions. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The concluding meeting of the guild for the year,, will take the form of a Christmas party, to be held early in December. S.S.A. Dance. The Returned -Soldiers' Association, Lower Hutt, held a well-attended dance last night. The club rooms, gaily decorated with wistaria, laburnum, and arum lilies, the. music of an excellent orchestra, and a tempting supper contributed to the success of a jolly evening. Messrs. W. Garratt and E. F. Walton were M.C.s, and the winners of the Monte Carlo dance were Mrs. Robins and Mr. Akers. The social committee comprised Messrs. H. Edwards (vice-president), E. F.
