BRIGHT PROSPECTS

COLD BOA AND ALMA

(Special to the "Evenini Fott") DUNEDIN, November 4. The Wingatui horses have left for the New Zealand Cup. Meeting and if Gore form is any criterion they^ are going to be prominent m their engagements.. Sixteen horses have made the $lngatui's only candidate. in the New Zealand Cup is Linguist. She was all out in her gallop over H miles on Tuesday morning, but tne time for the distance was very good and if she had not had to make_the pace all the way it might well have been bettered. Her successes in open company number only two, but sne has been difficult to train and a race here and there has kept her in form. Her dam Countersign won the Haziett Gold Cup and Dunedin Guineas when ridden by Linguist's present trainer, A. E. Didhara. ■ ■ ■ . With Gold Boa and Alma in the Stewards' Handicap, the others will have to go very fast to catch them. The former does not work at Wingatui but her trainer has stated that he is very confident. Her meeting with Alma is the first on record and this alone holds a lot of interest. Alma was never off the bit in her excellent gallop over six furlongs on Tuesday irtbining and travelled near the centre of the track throughout. After Gore her off knee gave concern, but she walked as sound as a bell on Tuesday morning after her trial. This season she has won three on end, and tne Paper Money mare is the class to make the grade successfully in such la race as the Stewards'. On account of the hard tracks she may not be raced much at Riccarton if victory comes her way on Saturday. Besides handicap engagements, Compensate, Stromboli, and Ortyx will seek classic honours. Compensate has already made one step in that direction by his win in the McLean Stakes, and though the distance may beat him in the Welcome Stakes, he should be there all the way. Stromboli has improved if anything lately and should perform much better on this visit to Riccarton. He went a good mile when accompanying Linguist on Tuesday and was finishing on. He is in the Spring Plate on Saturday, and the New Zealand Derby may mark an important engagement for the Gustavo horse on Wednesday. What with V racing and track work the Lord Warden filly Ortyx has had as much as a handicap horse, but she is standing up to it remarkably well. On Tuesday morning she went very fast over half a mile with Our Pal and seemed to have a little in hand. However, she does not look like seeing out a solid five furlongs. In the Linwood Handicap on Saturday Wingatui has four horses engaged and Lord Numeld and Great Pal are preferable to the other pair. Lord Numeld, with two wins and a second in his last four starts and likely to have the services of L. J. Ellis, should get some of the money. Great Pal may need the track easy although he is well treated in the weights, ..
