Miss Reta Bassett, whose marriage is to take place shortly, has been the guest of honour at several afternoon parties recently. On Saturday Mrs. E. J. Kirk, Selwyn Street, was hostess at a kitchen afternoon, where Miss Bassett was the recipient of many useful articles, in shades of green and cream. Those present included Mrs. L. Bassett, Miss R. Bassett, Mesdames B. Beswick, G. Hardy, G. R. Haldane, L. Gilberd, F. Reid, Fraser, L. Paul, R. Marks, H. James, T. Ellis, and Misses H. Bassett-Smith, M. Mainsworth, and M. Paso. Another enjoyable afternoon was spent at the home of Mrs. F. Webb-Jones, Gonville Avenue, who gave a "handkerchief and doyley afternoon" for Miss Bassett. A delightful programme of musical and elocutionary items was enjoyed, comprising songs by Mesdames O. Warnock, G. Bradshaw, T. L. Sperring.and A. C. Sievewright, duets by Mesdames O. Warnock and G. Hardy, violin solo by Mrs. Jeffs, and recitations by Mesdames H. Gilberd, Sperring, and F. Reid. Mrs, S. Kendall acted as accom-
panist. A dainty afternoon tea was served. Lawn Tennis. In spite'of dull and .stormy weather there was quite a good attendance at the official opening of St. James Tennis Club, on Saturday. Though it had rained hard in the morning, the courts dried nicely in the afternoon; and the members were able to enjoy a game. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn. Mr. McLean presented the cups that were won last year. The committee consisted of Misses B. Walker and J. Brand; and Messrs. D. Glenny, J. Walker, Sutton, and J. Weir. Afternoon Party. Last Thursday afternoon Mrs. Moore Hunter entertained the ladies of the Westmere P.W.M.U., at her home at Kai-Iwi. There was a gathering of about forty people. The day was gloriously fine, and the visitors enjoyed wandering about the beautiful garden. An instructive paper, written by Mrs. Meads, was read by. Miss Treadwell. Mrs. Dawes read an interesting letter from a missionary, giving an account of her work in China; and Miss Thea Collier added to the enjoyment of those present by contributing a musical item. Afternoon tea was provided. Personals. Mrs. Lawford is staying with her mother, Mrs. Chambers, Waipukurau. Canon and Mrs. W. G. Williams, Napier, are visiting Wanganui. Miss Mollie Mitchell, Guyton Street, is spending a holiday in Christchurch. Mrs. P. S. Whitlock, Somme Parade, is the guest of the Rev. and Mrs. Mitchell, Mount Albert, 'Auckland. ' Mrs. S. J. Sullivan and Miss Dawn Sullivan, Campbell Street, are visiting Wellington. Miss Marjorie Saunders, St. John's Hill, has returned from her trip to Weir lington. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Haig, who have been spending a few weeks in Wanganui, have returned to their home in Hawke's Bay. Mrs. H. E. B. Newton, who visited Napier for the golf tournament, has returned to Wanganui. Miss A. E. Jones, who accompanied her father on a trip to Western Samoa, has returned home. Mrs. Douglas Wilson is a Wanganui visitor'to Auckland.' Mrs. G. M. Currie, Kai Iwi, is visiting Auckland. Miss Webster, Wellington, is the guest of Miss Taylor, Campbell Street.
