HERE AND THERE

Writers and Artists. A very pleasant time was spent at the Lyceum Club last night, when the members of the Writers and Artists Club met for an "impromptu evening." Two competitions were held, one written round the title "Journey's End'; and the other for rhymes. Mrs. Isobel Andrews won the first, and Mrs. Ivor King and Miss P. Fitzgerald were first and second for the rhymes. Miss C. Keddell (president) gave a pleasant little talk about the work. Supper was served. WaHaceville Women's Institute. A meeting of the WaHaceville Women's Institute was held recently. a fair number of members being present. Mrs. Hopkirk presided. The winners of the monthly competition, "A Hand-made Toy," were Mrs. Anderson (first), Mrs. Clyde (second). The hostesses, Mesdames Scaiffe, Simpson, Watt, and Watson, served afternoon tea, and a demonstration was given of household appliances. The meeting concluded with a dance. School Concert Tomorrow. A very entertaining programme has been arranged for the Wellington- East Girls' College annual concert, which will be presented in the Town Hall Concert Chamber tomorrow and Friday night. The Old .Girls' Dramatic Society will take part, and there are to be plays, songs, verse-speaking, piano solos, drill, glees, and, as a grand finale, a delightful dance extravaganza, "Toymaker's Dream," in which 43 girls are taking part. There is a freshness and spontaneity about these school concerts which makes them particularly delightful and attractive, and a large attendance is anticipated. Dance at Technical College. The annual dance of the Technical College Tennis Club will be held in the college on Saturday at 8 p.m. An excellent orchestra has been engaged, and a home-made supper will be served. All old students and their friends cire cordially invited by advertisement in this issue to be present.
