HOUSING SCHEME
ALONG RIGHT LINES
OPPOSITION SUPPORT
Support for the housing scheme of the Government was given by the Hon. Sir Alfred Ransom (National, Pahiatua) in his speech in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon during the debate on the Budget.
Sir Alfred said he believed the proposals were along the right lines, but the difficulty was that the scheme created a tendency to increase the costs of house building. The same j thing had happened in the past when I the Government of the day took up [land for settlement, and land values rose immediately.
"I regret that there is to be no freehold under the scheme," he added. "I think it would be better for the Government to give some encouragement to the individual who rents a house
from the State that he would ultimately become the owner of the house."
