LEOPARD FOR ZOO

A leopard for the Wellington Zoo arrived by the Narbada yesterday and was taken to the Zoo today. There were originally a pair, but the male died before leaving India. They came from the Alipore Zoo, Calcutta. The female throve on board ship, but proved bad-tempered. In the today she was very restless, and finally took refuge in her sleeping quarters, out of sight The weather was certainly unpleasant. The leopard's present quarters are only temporary. A new cage for her is being finished in the neighbourhood of the old dingoes' cage, a nice sunny spot. n Two pairs of Demoiselle cranes, handsome, stately blue-backed birds, arrived at the same time as the leopard; they were in fine condition.
