BROKEN AXLE

TRAM TRAFFIC DELAYED

Part of the tramway traffic between the city and Karori, Northland and Wadestown, was delayed this morning by the breaking of an axle on a citybound Karori tram in • Molesworth Street. The mishap occurred shortly before 7 o'clock and it was not until about 9.15 o'clock that the damaged car wa: manoeuvred into Aitken Street, whence it was later removed to a siding on the first stage of its trip to the tramways workshops. Normally a broken axle does not mean any great inconvenience, but the single line in Molesworth Street, with its loops and points, presented some difficulty to the men who had the job of getting the damaged tram away, and their task was made no easier by the tram traffic that .banked up in the busy time between 7 and 9. Had the axle at the trailing end broken, the car could have been driven from the point of breakdown opposite Hawkestone Street directly to Aitken Street, but the break occurred in the leading bogie, and the car had to be driven back towards the junction of Park Street and Tinakori Road, and up Park Street where temporary repairs were effected. | Meanwhile Karori and Northland [traffic was resumed, but Wadestown passengers were conveyed by buses 'between the Government Buildings and Park Street, and by trams on the ! other side of the breakdown. About 19 o'clock the damaged vehicle was pushed by another tram into Aitken Street, the journey involving a lot of ticklish work at every set of points.
