NEW ZEALAND BEATEN
CRICKET AT SCARBOROUGH
ROBERTS BOWLS WELL
(From the Special Correspondent of tho • United Press Association.)
(Received September 11, 10 a.m.) SCARBOROUGH, September 10. A. batting collapse in the second innings caused New Zealand to be beaten by 145 runs by Leveson Gower's XL After dismissing their opponents for 208, New Zealand made 15G.
New Zealand performed creditably in the field, but the batting broke down. The last five wickets fell for 101 runs.
Roberts was in great form. Bowling into the wind he swerved awkwardly and kept an excellent length. His figures .in the morning were seven overs, one maiden, 21 runs, four wickets.
Excellent catching again assisted the bowlers. Wallace held two fine ones at mid-off, and Cowie a good one in the slips. '
New Zealand required to score over 300 runs in just over three hours. The early batsmen went for the runs, Hadlee and Kerr putting on 60 in a little over half an hour. Hadlee was brilliant, and hit seven 4's.
Six wickets fell quickly on a very lively pitch, Nichols bowling especially well. Gover captured his 200 th wicket for the second season in succession. Cowie has passed Merritt's record of 107 wickets, which was established on the first New Zealand tour in 1927.
Vivian, Tindill, Kerr, Hadlee, and Dunning will not visit Ireland.
The wicket wore more heavily than any other met on the tour, contributing largely to the failure of the tourists ito score the winning runs or play out time. The team faces an all-night journey by train and steamer to Dublin for the match against Ireland. Details:—
Bowlins: Gover took two wickets for 36 runs, Nichols five for 42, Brown one for 45, Wellard two for 2G.
