SUCCESSFUL AFTERNOON
The Seatoun branch of the Women's National Reserve celebrated its seventeenth birthday by holding a party. This took, the form of a "coin afternoon" in aid of the, Residential Nursery, Owen t Street.
The party was held in the Bowling Club pavilion, which looked gay with its decorations of green and gqld ; streamers, and bowls of arum lilies and golden Iceland poppies.
The stall; presided over by Mes-dames-.H. Gardiner and Woodley, added to the brightness with its lovely spring flowers and attractive goods. A produce stall arranged by Mrs. B. F. Gardener was tempting to all present wits its' home-made brawn, cakes, pickles, marmalade, etc. Mesdames Higgins and McLeod assisted at this stall. .
■ Mrs. Martyn Williams and Miss J. Lewis contributed monologues and the Misses Edwards pianoforte solos.
Numerous competitions were held, one being arranged by Mrs. Murphy, and useful and,dainty trophies were presented to the winners. The presents included the birthday cake given by- Mrs. S. Stone, iced. cakes donated by Mrs. Maxwell, a cushion from Mrs. Pilcher, also a large framed mirror, which had been obtained by Mrs. Pycroft and Miss E. M. Freeman.
During the afternoon Mrs. A. Gibbons spoke on the work in general of the Women's National Reserve, the welfare branch, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Cemetery committee, and the residential nursery.
Mrs. Me Vicar in a short talk, spoke of the wonderful help the residential nursery, Owen Street, is to sick mothers by taking good care of their small children while they are in hospital.
Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. S. Stone, her helpers being the Misses Barker, Stone, and Wakelin. Mesdames White and Lancaster assisted in various ways and it was felt that Mrs. White (hon. treasurer) would have a goodly sum to pay into the funds as a result of the effort for the residential nursery, Owen Street. Hostesses for the. afternoon were Mesdames Davis, B. F. Gardiner, and Miss1 E. M. Freeman.
