SUSTENANCE CASES

FALSE STATEMENTS

MINISTER ON PENALTIES

A strong plea to'the Minister of. Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webß) for a reconsideration of the law in relation to prosecutions arising from false returns made by unemployed in respect of their earnings, was made on Friday by a deputation from the Unemployed Workers' Movement (reports the "Star* Sun"). Through their ignorance and the confusing nature of the information desired by the Department, it was contended, many unemployed men unknowingly made false statements. Sentences which had been meted out by the Courts were regarded, in. some instances, as excessive under the circumstances. ■ . ;

The Minister said it gave him" no pleasure to read about a poor fellow having been prosecuted; but it had to be remembered that every penny taken from the fund meant one penny less to go round. The deputation was assured that the Department would deal sympathetically with any man who made a return through ignorance, provided he acted reasonably in the matter of making restitution of any money received as a result.
