POLL ON HOUSING LOAN

At the last meeting; of the Upper; Hutt Borough Council the: Mayor (Mr. A. J. McCurdy) brought forward a liotice of motion, "That.application be

made to the Loans Board for authority to take a poll of the ratepayers to borrow the sum of £10,000 for -the purpose of erecting dwellings for ap^ proved purchasers under the provisions of the Housing Act, 1935," but it lapsed when there was no seconder.

Last evening the matter was reopened and received unanimous support, except that the amount was reduced to £5000.

Five applications • have been received under the Housing Act, the amount involved being £4283.

If the? Loans Board sanctions the loan, the poll will be taken with that for extra expenditure on the new well in the Trentham racecourse. *.

A letter was received from the Upper Hutt branch of the Labour Party expressing disappointment with the attitude adopted by the council when the resolution was submitted by the Mayor at the previous meeting. The branch considered that the council had failed miserably to co-operate with the Government and had also been responsible for a grave injustice to residents of the district.
