LIVESTOCK MARKETS

The keen demand for beef cattle which haft been a feature' of the livestock market in recent weeks was again, in evidence at this'week's sales, with further advances in prices.'* Sheep generally maintained late rates.

The best yarding of beef, both for quantity and quality, for many months maintained recent high values at Westfield. First-class ox was available, although the quality improvement was more outstanding in the cow section. Extra choice,ox sold to 41s a 1001b. An iaverage : yarding of' sheep sold at fully J^te ■ rates. Shorn sheep were more i \mieraus.. A small supply of hoggets realised, firm values. Spring lambs were offered for the, first time of the season, and realised to 41s 6d. A full entry of calves included mostly small sorts. Prime vealers were firm at late rates, with a slight easing of about 5s a head for unfinished calves. The biggest yarding of pigs for five months included good quality. Porkers were about 3s a head dearer, because of the operations of buttermilk men, and store*, were also firmer. Baconers eased by about 3s each. Included in a medium yarding of 287 head of fat cattle at Burnside were some exceptionally prime bullocks, as well as heifers> and cowr of good quality. An even sale resulted, and competition was well sustained. Although values for prime bullocks were a shade easier, heifers and cows were firm at late rates. The yarding of sheep numbered 1675. The sheep entry included a number of heavy ewes and a good percentage of prime wethers. Values on the whole were inclined to be erratic. Fat pigs were in short supply, the entry consisting principally of porkers, which sold at late rates. Baconers were also short and realised from 2s to 3s a head more than at the previous sale. A phenomenal rise in beef and mutlpn values was recorded at the Stortfbrd Lddge sale because of very short yardings. - \

JOHNSONVILLE SALE. ;" •■ Wrjjfct, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., aoi Abraham and Williams, Ltd,, report that a large yarding of cattle and an average yarding of sheep were offered at the Johnsonville stock sale yesurday. The bullocks were chiefly good-quality V medium-weight cattle, with; a few pens of heavyweights. Ail classes met with spirited competition, with prices for heavyweight cattle' firm to the extent of 5s on last week. Light and; mediumweights showed no alteration. The cows and' heifers were of exceptionally, good quality and; sold readily at prices, on a par with those ruling on outside markets. A .total clearance was effected for cows ex dairy at no alteration in prices. Only a fe- runners and vealers came forward and these met with a good sale at prices firm 5s to 10a on last week. The wethers penned were of good quality and chiefly light to mediumweight No heavy wethers came forward. Well-finished sheep met with a good Bale with no alteration in prices, but lightweight and unfinlrhed sorts were slightly easier. Th yarding of ewes was of indifferent quality, only a few pens of prime heavy sheep being yarded. These met with a steady demand at prices on a par. Unfinished and plain ewes.were easier by is to Is 6d a head with little inquiry. There was only a small penning of hoggets and two-tooths, which met with a good demand at late rates.

Under keen competition from a largo attendance of buyers, prices for lat stock hardened further at the Levin sale. Other prices were on a par with fiill late rates.
