WOMEN POLICE

INCREASE IN LONDON

More than a thousand girls from the English provinces have disappeared in London in the last year or. two, and in order to cope more effectively with the situation the Home Secretary has decided to increase the number of Metropolitan women police. Recruiting of these policewomen has already been started, and before the end of the year then: will be 140 on duty in Hyde Park, in the streets, and other public places. A special appeal has been made Tor women to train1 as detectives, and guide mistresses, welfare workers, and others accustomed to 'dealing with girls are asked to come forward andjoin the Police Force. Only picked women are wanted and they must have received at least W' secondary school education and be unmarried. This announcement from an English paper is of special interest to New Zealand women who have. a. great wish that the younger girls in this country should have the advantage of the care of trained policewomen. It is regarded as of the first importance that the standard of education should be high, and that women of broad outlook, kindliness, and discretion should be chosen. The English rates of pay are £2 16s to £4 per week, rising to £6 12s per week, with the rank of inspector. . ■ . ..:'■•■•
