IN UMTALI JACKET
SCOTSDEN'S DUNEDIN WIN
• (Special to the "Eventng Post.1!) •■-, . ' DUNEDIN, August 31. ■Considering that at Wm-; gatui last Saturday for the Otago Hunt, Club's Annual Meeting was very deep and holding, causing the runners to labour,: defections were very light, there being only five scratchmgs in all f°The eHunt aC?ub" Cup was hot teresting as in former years, Scotsden &^ls^rKnalSfS.Tl! latter, ridden right out from the last fence, drew within 'half a , length of Scotsden 100 yards from the post, but W Cooper kicked Scotsden and went awayag'ain. The winner was racing for the first time in the colours of Mr. R. Howard, who owned, Umtali when he won .the Great Western Steeplechase, and.he was brought back by F. Shaw after-the National Meeting. This trainer seems to knqv/ now to get a race out'of a steeplechaser, Cock o': the North being another recent lnThe Panmure—Miss Cljatswood .six-year-old Jollyanna, who came from Southland with a big reputation in the hunting, field, fully lived up to it..; fane has had practically no race experience but galloped, and jumped in promising style.': She should make a welcome addition to steeplechasing.ranks in the UAraboa's form on the last day of thfe Grand-National Meeting and subsequent track work saw him starta good' favourite in the Tally-Ho Handicap. At| the distance it looked as if he had haa enough, but L. J. Ellis rode him with his usual vigour right to the post, where Half Note, on the outside, was held off by a head. McHeath, who flashed up over the last few strides, was another head away, and as he was last into the straight Araboa and Half Note were lucky'to finish in front of him. ' ■ ■ ' . There is no doubt that Dissemble is an improved mare, as her three wins in her last five starts have shown, and she has/been a good investment for Mr. R. K. Aitchison, who leased her before the June Meeting at Wingatui. A. Mess^ervy showed excellent judgment in riding her, not letting her go to the.front as is usual. An extra furlong, and a 61b penalty seemed against her chances when produced for the second time, but patient handling saw her stay on solidly, and hold off Hanlon. ■ ■, Toreador rcame right away from a very tired lot at the finish of the Sea View Hack Hurdles to score his first win over fences. It was ah overdue success, arid he was the outsider bar one. Trainer-rider H. Andertort lost The Surgeon When that gelding was showing promise over the jumps, so this turn of luck with Toreador was some compensation. . In this race Sunward made a bad jump at the last fonca and lost his bridle but Register held to his seat. Sunward had no chanco at the time of the incident.
The Hunters' Flat was a walk-over for Tautau Maid. Nightsail, the well'bred daughter of Niglit Eaid and Set Sail, who was having heir second outing, might have done better in the run home if less use had been made of her from the jump-out. She shows promise as a hurdler and on better tracks should soon win a stake for P. T. Hogan. , Wingatui-trained horses did well, F. Shaw with Scotsden and Arabqa and A, S. McKay with Dissemble '(twice) accounting for four races, and Toreador, trained by H. A. Anderton, winning [one of the remaining two galloping I events.
History Paper was ridden by a gentleman rider irf the Otago Hunt Club Steeplechase and went out with 151b overweight. He finished fourth but was a long way back when Scotsdea crossed the line.
Valantua again raced somewhat disappointingly and a win in the immediate future does not now look very hopeful. Kelly the Crow retired well beaten over half a mile from home in the steeplechase.
