AVONDALE STAKES PAYMENT

LIKELY SORTS LISTED AMONG THE BIG FIELD

(By "jßangatira.")

An indication that there are again going to be plenty of juveniles about this season, and probably plenty of talent too, is given by the excellent entries that have been received for the Wanganui ■ Debutant Stakes and for the Avondale Stakes. The Avondale Stakes will be the first of the season's two-year-old "classics," and tiie .twenty-six that remained in at the final payment last Friday are two more than last year's payment, which was

an exceptionally good race com;

iared with previous years,

' The majority of the youngsters in the Avondale field are owned in the Auckland district, the outside representation this year being rather smaller than usual. Of the twenty-six, only four are also in the V/anganui Debutant field of fourteen, so that thirtysix, two-year-olds have already been listed for the early juvenile races. As all the Avondale Held have either been named, or have had a name unsuccessfully claimed, it is likely that there will be a big muster- at trie post 'in a fortnight's time, i The four also engaged at Wanganui are Diana Xetrix, -Dissipation, Protector, and Ruling Lady, whose credentiate have been previously noted. Among the remaining twenty-two are dome excellently bred youngsters. ANOTHER GALLIO? Of particular note is Te Hero, who is a brown Colt by Heroic, tne leading sire of the Commonwealth, trom tne Catmint—Hyaaes mare .Prodice, hencea half-brother to Gailio. .Prodi cc, who won the Avondale 3taKes in her year, was sent over, to Australia .for this mating by her owners, Messrs. D, K. Walker and M. H. Tims, wher sold the resultant offspring last February to Mr. J. Hollieiv now of Otanuhu. Te iHero's showing in the parade' at the IPakuranga Meeting recently satisfied most northern racegoers that they had already seen the Avondale Stakes winner in action.' Mr. Hollier, by ; the way, raced Kinross some seasons ago without much success. Te Hero has been described by one northern critic as aptly named. But others will consider the name a blot on the family scutcheon. The Te is evidently meant for the Maori article, but Hero, as far as can be ascertained, is not a Maori word at all. Te Here, "The Knot," might have been a happier effort. With the Greek word Prodice, there has been a right royal mixture of tongues, so that the next offspring might fittingly have been called Babel, if that name had not already been used for a horse who made no mark on the Turf. Another youngster who impressed as well forward in the Pakuranga parade was Nordic Song, who actually beat Te Hero home, though the one was ridden out and the other was under a strong hold. Nordic Song is a chestnut colt oy Hunting Song from the Martian—Grand Opera mare Nordica, a sister to the dual Derby winner Cherubini and to the New Zealand Derby winner Rossini, and dam previously of Cohesion, Sandburr, Hannibal, and Puccini. Bred by Mr. F. Hall, he was secured at the January sales for 160 guineas by Mr. F. L. Colbeck, of Papakura. , . ' Also attracting notice in the Pakuranga parade was Eastern Heir, another of Mr. W. H. Maria's Australian purchases. This youngster is a bay colt full-brother to The Buzzer, being by The Buzzard (son of Spion Kop) from the Syce mare Eastern Belle, a half-sister to Lough Neagh's dam (Terentia), and he cost his present owner 220 guineas at the Sydney Easter sales.. , Among the remaining colts, who are more numerous than usual in this year's field, is Namara, a chestnut son of Lackham and the Day Comet— Tikima mare Tikaday, a half-sister to Dungarvan and descending from the 'famous Manto taproot. At the Janu- , ary -sales he was bought by Mrs. w. D. Graham for 230 guineas, and he has since been resold to Messrs. H. L. ana C. Forbes, of Stratford. Vitement, given in the list or payments as a Persis colt, is a son of the Martian horse Raceful and he is owned by his breeder, Mr. L. S. Otway. His dam, Persis, a Marble Arch mare now 23 years old, has previously left such useful horses as Lady Lois (a previous winner of the AvonIdsle Stakes), Tuahine, Nucleus, Boyal Duke, Persham. Gay Seton. Gay Chief, Persian Lady, etc.

! GOOD WINNING LINE. Arvakur is avbrown colt by Beau Pere from the- Chief Ruler—Dueella mare The Begum, hence a half-brother to Stretto, the winner of the Avondale Stakes two years ago, and to Mazir. The Begum is half-sister to Supremacy, who also won the race. Bred by Mr. A J McGovern, Arvakur, after a couple of private sales, is now owned by Mr. T. Impey, of Auckland, who has lately returned to the game after having'disposed of all his horses .uv training (Greek Gold, etc.) a few yelayo!a°is a brown colt by Boy Jay (a brother, to Jayson and Hunting Jay) from the Merry Moment— Lyrique mare Lyrola, who, like the sire, never raced, and he is owned by his breeder, Mr. F. Bred by Mr. A. B. Preston, of Ohau; he was secured at the January sales for 275 aumeas by Mri M. Steinberg, of Auckland, who also races Elanage and Love Parade. Wynardo is a bay colt by The Ace from the Glen Albyn—Glenburn mare Wynette, and he is owned by ms breeder, Mr. R- M. Taylor, of Te In the list, besides Protector, are a couple of geldings. Kingcraft, a name well known in the trotting arena, is a half-brother by King Lv to Rona Bay, being only the ■ second foal yet left by the Lucullus mare. Caviare, and he will carry the colours of his breeder, Mr. R. 8.. Hines. of Te Aroha. The other gelding is Phildale, a bay spn of Philamor and the Nassau—Lady "Frisco mare Lunette, half-sister to Paddon, Chang, Young Paddon, etc., and dam previously of Erndale. He will be'raced by his brender, Mr. vf. James, of Auckland, whose colours

Paddon once carried with marked success. ■ . ,

Ancell, of Gisborne, wh*o bought her privately from her breeder, Mr. R. C. Fiskeri. ' The unnamed Lady Comet filly in the list is by Surveyor, being a .half-, sister to Lady England and a sister to I Cometarium, and she will sport the jacket of her breeder, Mr. B. Brewer, of Cambridge, owner also of Tudor. Bayamo is a. bay daughter of The Ace and the Lord Multifid—Tinoreka
