FLEET AIR ARM

BRITISH PROGRAMME

LEAD TO NATIONS

SPEARHEAD OF NAVAL

POWER

(Received August 11, 11.40 a.m.)

LONDON, August 10.

Mr. Hector, Bywater, writing in the •'Daily Telegraph," says that Britain intends to make the Fleet air arm the spearhead of the Navy's power, and that it will be ahead of all foreign Powers in quality, and second only to the United States in quantity. After the new carriers and catapult ships are completed Britain will have 520 planes borne on carriers and 165 on catapult ships, compared with a total of 200 at present. Further increases will be made later. Lower deck ratings will be trained as pilots, and methods of take-off and alighting on the sea will be developed to enable planes to operate in any weather except storms.- A system of long-range patrols to warn ships against air raids and protect shipping in the Narrow Seas is to be introduced. _^___«.i
