THE CANOPUS

The article which appeared in these columns last Saturday about the steamer Canopus has prompted a reader to address a few lines to "Spunyarn." "For . eighteen. months," .he writes,'"l was stationed 'as : radio operator and lightkeeper at Cape Maria" Van Diemeh,' which as you .probably known is an island on which live only three families. Whilst at Cape Maria the Canopus became a great friend to me—not,as a ship, mastered and manned by strangers, but a personality, sympathetic, lighthearted, ■ and very courageous, ever interested in us islanders, and of great interest to us. By daytime I have watched her brave-

ly crest ' tremendous seas, or steam along confidently in a calm sea, very close to the: island and treacherous rocks. By night I have signalled her, and always felt that her master and crew were in accord with one another, and were: glad,'as I'was, to make contact with some other human beings."
