UNLIKELY STARTER

MISS PANGO AT HASTINGS

(Special to tlie "Eveninn Post.")

PALMERSTONN., This' Day. There was a fair amount of interesting, work at Awapuni yesterday morning, and the weather was fine, though cold, and the course in tip-top order, the going being firm and dry. The flags were on the outside of the course proper, and the two-year-olds were worked against the rails. Dawning Light was sprinted five furlongs, and she moved smoothly throughout and pulled up well after taking lmin 7 2-ssec for the distance. She is to race at Marton next,, week. The Ranger, who will be ridden by C. Thomson in the Hawke's Bay Hunt Club Steeplechase tomorrow, was given a useful work-out over a mile, and after being required to put the first six furlongs behind in even time he was speeded up to come home the last two in 27 -2-ssec. The last six furlongs took lmin 28sec, and he looks to be in good nick for tomorrow's outing under silk. Among the first to-work: were Wild Flower, who has rejoined the active brigade and who looks very fit after her holiday, and Laughing Lad. They were sprinted half a mile and were •timed to run"thfe.first furlong:in. 14 2-d sec; they just broke 54sec for the full distance, being together at the post. Hirangi appeared to be doing^ it better than Tail Light, at the end of six furlongs cut out in lmm 19 4-ssec. It was a very nice gallop, and they were together at the post, the last three furlong! having taken 4psec. Martara s three-quarter brother, Baldric, and All Blood sprinted a couple of furlongs in 25sec without being asked to do any Pango (W. J. Broughton), who is now unlikely to make the Hawke's Bay trip, was galloped a mile witn Manawatu (J.Rao), and Manawatu had a slight advantage at the finish after they had been timed to take lmin 52sec for the journey. Manawatu had a pull in the weights, and neither wab flat out at the finish. The sectional times going out were: 41 2-sscc, lmin Dsec, and lmin 24sec.
