ELECTRIC POWER

GROWING DEMAND

WAITAKI EXTENSIONS

An indication of the increasing popularity of electric power in New Zealand is given in a statement by the Acting Minister of Public "Works (the Hon. P. C. Webb) today. Since the Southland district was brought into the South Island hydro-electric link-up the combined load on the WaitakiColeridge system has grown, at a rate which indicates that the demand will be up to full capacity within.two years. Much of this, was due, the Minister said to the increased load on the West Coast and fa Southland. The Government had decided to call tenders for the installs^on Of two . 15,000 kilowatt generators, the foundations for which were already in.position. One would be sufficient to .meet the. demand for some time but two would have to be used later, and it was advisable to have a spare unit in the system.
