RUGBY FOOTBALL
MEMORIAL FUND GAME
WIN FOR PUBLIC SERVICE
Keen appreciation of the action taken in. arranging a special Rugby football match in aid of the King George V Memorial Fund was 'expressed by the Acting Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, at a gathering of players and enthusiasts at the conclusion of the match yesterday afternoon. Special mention was made of the part played by the players and the Public Service Sports Tournament Society and»of the co-operation of the Wellington Rugby Union, Mr. G. B. Reynolds (chairman of the society) joining with the Acting Prime Minister in thanking the Wellington Rugby Union for its assistance. The president of the Wellington Rugby Union (Mr. J. Prendeville) expressed thanks to the players for the fine.game they had provided in helping a worthy cause.
The match was played at Athletic Park between a team from the Public Services and a Wellington team, and it was quite an entertaining event for some 4000 enthusiasts. Prior to the commencement of play the participants were introduced to the Acting Prime Minister. In the teams were .'many players who have figured prominently in representative football, in Wellington or elsewhere. The play, had plenty of bright features, and in general performance the Public Service showed up to more advantage than the Wellington team. Public Service won by 21 points to 5. : . . ■ The teams were:— • , Wellington. — '■ Vartan; McGreevy, Jones, Edwards; Love, Reynolds; Thompson; Souness, O'Brien, Bishop, Cassidy, Calcinai, Dellabarca, Mollier, Kenny. Emergencies: Patterson, Robinson; Hardie. Todd was not available owing to an injury. .< Public Service. — Pollock; Burns, Hudson, Gillespie; Langdon, Veitch; O'Halloran; Andrews, Butler, Pringle, Donoghue, Guiniven, Cooper, Berry, Kirschberg. Emergencies: Cook, Upchurch; Kofoed and Carlyoh. The referee was Mr. A. C. Swan. Most of the scoring was done in the second spell. In the first half the Public Service team, although doing most of the attacking, found the 'Wellington defence strong. A try near the posts by Kirschberg, converted by Pollock, was Vac only , success they achieved. The teams underwent' alteration in the second spell, Cook and Upchurch replacing Bums and Hudson in the Service team, and Fatterson^and Robinson took over from McGreevy and Jones in the Wellington side. Another change took place early in the second spell, Cassidy, who, was injured, being replaced by Tietjens, one of the Service emergencies. » Wellington were not long in'collecting points, Love snapping up a dropped pass to pave the way for a try by Reynolds, which Vartan converted. This, however, was the sum total of tfco Wellington team's- scoring. The Public Service side took the lead again when Folloclc kicked a. penalty goal. This was followed up by a try by And-.ews, converted by Pollock. The next scoring movement by the Service team was an excellent one, O'Halloran and Pollock collaborating well to enable Kir.?chberg» to score his second try. This time Pollock'was unable to convert, but towards the. end of the spell he was again seen in the role of .an attacking back. He made a splendid/ run which ended in Gillespie scoring a try, which Pollock converted, making the final score: Public Service 21,, Wellington 5.
