UNPLEASANT WEATHER

Special forecast for Wellington:—.

Strong and squally northwesterly winds, backing to southerlies tonight.

. Weather cloudy to overcast with intermittent rain, and becoming colder.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is;for northerly winds at first to the north of Greymouth and Kaikoura. Southerlies will prevail thence southward, and: southerlies wilL extend over: the Dominion within the next twenty-four hours. Winds will be moderate to strong generally, and later gale force will be reached in places. The weather will still be unsettled, with rain at times in most districts and with some heavy, falls in places. Snow is probable on the ranges, hail in places, and temperatures will become, colder. ;

The depression of moderate intensity, which yesterday lay to the westward, had crossed the Dominion by this morning, the lowest pressure being off the East Coast of the South Island. Unsettled, dull, and misty weather has continued, to prevail, and except between East. Cape' and Cape Palliser rain has been fairly general, and some places have had heavy falls at times. Northerly winds freshened somewhat last night, especially about and to the south of Cook Strait. By this morning a southerly change had taken place over the southern half of the South Island, but over the remainder of the Dominion temperatures were still mild. An anti-cyclone is now advancing across the Tasman Sea.

Auckland's weather yesterday was fair to cloudy, but > since last evening it has been showery, with a northeasterly breeze.

In Wellington it was mild and overcast most of the day, but the sun broke through for a brief period in the afternoon. A moderate north-westerly wind prevailed and became strong last night. Frequent showers have fallen since 1 a.m. today, the fall at Kelburn up to 9 a.m. being 22 points.

Christchurch had a sunny morning and a cloudy afternoon. There was very little wind and temperatures were mild. Since 8 am. today a light misty drizzle has been falling at times with a south-westerly breeze.

It was calm and dull in Dunedin yesterday. Rain set in about 6 p.m. and continued through the night,. 78 points being recorded up to 9 a.m. today. A moderate southerly-wind has

prevailed there.
